(updated September 12, 2008)
The SEM08 local arrangements committee would like to invite all SEM members to showcase the breadth of interests that we have in a series of concerts during the conference. Our initial plan is for each concert to consist of a series of short pieces performed by any of our members, either solo, duo, or small group. The pieces should be 3 to 7 minutes long, and only one piece per member. We anticipate 10 to 25 members participating in each concert. Depending on the response, the concerts will most likely be organized within the framework of a combination of SEM Sections and Special Interest Groups as well as Wesleyan’s performance ensembles (e.g. African, South Asian, East Asian, Southeast Asian, Latin American/Caribbean). Wesleyan has an extensive collection of instruments (including an extensive collection of Ghanaian drums, East Asian string instruments and drums), which may be used by performers not able to transport their own. Wesleyan’s Virtual Instrument Museum shows a sampling of our holdings.
We wish to provide a forum where members, new and old, can share their performance work with each other. The concerts, therefore, should be made up of SEM members attending the meeting (and friends if they wish to join in). Participating in one of these concerts will not preclude anyone from submitting an abstract proposal to the Program Committee.
Would interested members who would like to perform please send a comment to the relevant posting on this blog with an initial indication of what you would do? In the early fall we can finalize the program. Please pass the word on to other SEM members. Thanks for your participation,
Eric Charry
Local Arrangements Committee Chair
update (9/12/08)
We are thrilled and grateful for the overwhelming response from SEM members. The deadline for signing up to participate is September 30. We urge performers to keep the pieces to a length of 5 to 7 minutes maximum, and only one piece per member.
I will bring my gender wayang instruments and perform with Andy McGraw and Lisa Gold so please add my name to that list. Thank you.
Best to all,
Brita
