UPDATE: We may have to cancel the outdoor recreation. We would instead serve lunch in the ten next to the Usdan Center and offer a series of concerts and workshops. See the posts for the latest news (10/23/08).
We invite everyone to join us on Sunday (Oct. 26) from 12:30pm to 3:30pm for an afternoon of outdoor and indoor recreation at the Freeman Athletic Center, a short walk from the main conference venue. Lunch and refreshments will be provided for all (including those who come just to watch). We hope this will be an occasion for all SEM members to get to know each other in an informal and unusual setting along the lines of a really big picnic. Committees and interest groups meeting during the lunch hour might consider meeting in an open air setting so that they may fully participate. We also encourage schools that wish to have reunion parties to consider this slot, a welcoming environment that may encourage friendly interaction.
Members may use this blog to organize teams (e.g. softball, soccer, ping pong), possibly along the lines of geographic regions, special interest groups or sections, seniority (any grad students interested in trouncing the post-50 crowd?), etc.
We will have the full use of the Freeman Athletic Center outdoor and indoor facilities:
- Outdoor (softball, soccer, frisbee, tennis, hiking)
- Indoor (swimming, ice skating, ping pong, squash, basketball, volleyball, fitness center, yoga, tai chi)
We are pleased to offer a tai chi demo and class at 2:30pm with Master Zhang Zhao Xun.
We are pleased to offer a yoga class at 1:30pm with Susan Rosati.
Both classes will take place rain or shine.
In case of rain we will meet in the indoor fieldhouse and also organize informal music making at the Usdan Center.
The athletic facilities will be available free of charge to registered conference participants throughout the four days.
Please leave a reply on the Recreation Groups subpage if you would like to join a group or form a team.
Hi!
Any soccer fans out there who fancy a five-aside or even a full game if we get enough enthusiasts? Shan’t pack my boots if nobody responds.
Best,
Muriel Swijghuisen Reigersberg (Roehampton University, UK)
I am not SEM members, but I am Wesleyan student and play for Gamelan. Lets kick the ball. If there is not enough people, I can get some of my friends to play.
