Irish Music Concert

Performers

Chris Smith. Bouzouki, tenor banjo, DADGAD guitar, song.
Sean Williams. Fiddle, Irish-language song.
Adam Braunschweig. Tenor Banjo or mandolin, guitar.
Tes Slominski. Cleek Schrey & I will perform together–fiddles (and maybe fiddle/piano if there’s one there?)

Performers

Stephanie Conn (voice) with Andy Millhouse (guitar). Gaelic song from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. We could fit into a North American vernacular panel, or even a European one I suppose. Or could the Irish musicians cast a glance over to Scotland or the New World?

Southeast Asian Music Concert

We will have at least one Wesleyan Javanese gamelan performance, which may include SEM members. Depending on the response here, we may either fold SEM members into the context of a gamelan event or hold a separate event.

Performers

Priwan Nanongkham. I would like to offer a short performance on the Ranat Ek, a Thai classical xylophone. It should be a solo piece with possibly some percussive accompaniments. I have not decided about the music yet, but it should not be longer than 7 minutes.
Andy McGraw and Lisa Gold. Balinese gender wayang, possibly with two other performers. We would play about 15-20 min of trad music, although we could play more if there is interest.
Sean Williams. There’s a possibility of three of us playing tembang Sunda (kacapi, suling and voice). We would not take more than ten minutes.
Bambang Sunarto. If it is possible for me to come to Wesleyan, I would like to perform my piece, a Javanese traditional song in sindhenan style, accompanied by rebab and piano (approximately 15-20 minutes).

South Asian Music Concert

Performers

Deepti Navaratna. Carnatic classical vocal music. Will need mridangam accompaniment and a Carnatic violin player (if possible) for this performance.
Stanley Scott. North Indian vocal classical/Bengali folk. I’ll try to arrange for accompanists (tabla and harmonium).

Chad Hamill. North Indian classical vocal music. I am in need of tabla accompaniment (preferably someone who can play vilambit ektal).
Utpola Borah. Hindustani classical, Folk and Sufi songs of Assam. I will need a tabla player for Hindustani recital.
Matthew Allen with David Nelson. I’d like to perform an original composition for piano & mridangam & voice (and perhaps another instrument or two). The music I’m writing these days is informed in various ways by karnatak music & I think it would go nicely on a south asia theme concert.
Tim (T M) Hoffman. Vocal (khyal, thumri, bhajan; Uttar Pradesh folk; can also use Japanese classical poetry in these forms), Japanese koto and shakuhachi (which are now officially recognized in India as instruments of Hindustani classical music). I would appreciate being able to work with any accompanists - tabla, pakhawaj, mridangam, violin, sarangi…T M Hoffman

Visharad (Distinction) classical vocal & flute (using Japanese shakuhachi) from Bhatkhande College of Music (Lucknow)
David Trasoff. North Indian instrumental—sarode.
Hans Utter. Sitar, with Nasir Syed, focusing on our gharana’s style.
Peter Manuel. A short sitar item and/or accompaniment to kathak.
Garrett Field (Karnatak mandolin) and Aaron Paige (mridangam). We would love to perform some South Indian Karnatak music (alapana, kritis and kalpanasvaram improvisation). Also, if you are a Karnatak musician looking for accompaniment we’d be happy to help. My email is gfield@wesleyan.edu

Performers

Welson Tremura. I am interested in performing as a solo artist (guitar and voice - MPB, SAMBA, BOSSA-NOVA-BAIAO) or with a group of our students during the 2008 SEM meeting (percussion, guitar, and voice - CHORO, MARACATU, COCO, SAMBA). The University of Florida has a long tradition in the studies of music and culture in Latin America. Please contact me directly for more specifics. Colleen Haas. I direct a performing ensemble here at Indiana University that plays Afro-Brazilian repertoire from the northeastern state of Bahia; i.e. samba-reggae and related song styles. The majority of members in the ensemble are graduate students in the ethnomusicology program at Indiana University. I would be willing to run a hands-on workshop with the assistance of the ensemble for conference attendees before the concert and then showcase those songs at the concert.I can bring some of the smaller drums and extra hand-held percussion instruments on the plane but I am wondering if Wesleyan has any of the larger isntruments, (surdos) (or smaller ones as well) that we could use.Let me know. thank you, Colleen
Julian Gerstin. With the conference so close to where I live, I’ve got the luxury of two options: (1) My community student group performing one or two Afrocuban pieces. (2) My eclectic Afro-Caribbean free jazz band Zabap. Violin, trombone, piano, bass & three percussionists. We play arrangements of Martinican, Cuban & Ghanaian material as well as originals; for this concert we’d play one or two of the Caribbean arrangements. A response to Colleen Haas: I’ve got two surdos you could borrow. (Again, the luxury of living nearby).
Shannon Dudley. I would like to play a couple of tunes on steel pan (double second), with Marisol Berríos-Miranda on keyboard, and a drummer/percussionist. If there are other interested pan players, either among SEM members or Wesleyan students, I could also help coordinate a larger pan ensemble.
Beto Gonzalez. I would love to join Colleen for the Afro-Brazilian group. I directed a large group at UCLA (currently on leave doing research). I have videos on YouTube under batUCLAda. Coming from CA might be difficult for me to bring much needed big drums though.

I would also love to get a “roda de samba” happening. Jason Stanyek, Fred Moehn, Steve Pond, you hear me calling? I don’t think we’ll get shut down at Wesleyan like we did in Hawaii… Any other samba players interested please contact me betogonzalez@ucla.edu.
